Britain’s Got Talent (Series 8-14)
SERIES VT DIRECTOR
I have worked on Britain’s Got Talent for 7 years, longer than any other show, and it has been incredible fun. In this time I have been responsible for shooting and directing pre-titles and openers, backstage b-roll and live show VT’s.
Over the years I’ve shot and directed over 1000 acts backstage at auditions and nearly 300 live show VT’s.
Producers Tour.
For the last two years the BGT audition tour has only visited London and Manchester. As such the team needed b-roll shots of acts across the country to give the show scale. It was my responsibility over a week to travel the country with a small team of 5 people, shooting and directing all the footage needed, with a variety of acts in different locations. Here is a showreel of that footage from Series 13.
Live Show VT’s.
For each acts live show performance in the semi-finals and finals of Britain’s Got Talent, they have a 1 minute 15 second VT that plays before they perform. This VT is to remind the viewer of the act, build excitement for their performance and to engage the viewer in the acts story.
I have shot and directed almost every live show VT from series 8-9 and 11-13. During this time I have tried to innovate and push creatively what a VT can do, all with a small budget and a skeleton crew of 5; producer, soundie, researcher, runner and myself. One of the biggest things I tried to change was how we approached the VT’s creatively. In the past they were all shot as simple mini-doc’s with an interview and basic b-roll. I wanted to create a world for the act and to immerse the viewer in that world, especially with the high-concept acts where they were in character. From a technical side I introduced the use of cinema grade cameras and lenses, better quality lighting and improved camera movement with drones and gimbals, all whilst staying within budget.
Below are stills taken from some of my favourite VT’s.
