All Together Now

As Series VT Director I oversaw the creatives and shoots for contestant VT’s, judge VT’s, openers, pre-titles and backstage reality on the show.

Series Opener.

I developed, directed and shot the pre-titles and opener. It opens with a stylised performance giving the viewer an idea of what the show is and how it works. We then introduce ‘The 100’ judges with an epic arrival and then go into backstage reality and the studio. Working with 100 judges is a tricky job, especially with a tight time-frame and budget - but I’m happy with the results I achieved.

Contestant VT’s.

A unique approach was needed for the contestant VT’s, firstly because the BBC did not want any b-roll in them and also because we had a very limited time to shoot. I decided on a 3 camera approach to the interviews with one of the cameras shooting behind the scenes. I wanted the VT’s to feel very real and as such we often included much of what would usually be cut from an interview, such as outtakes, or when the contestant walks into the room and sits down. We also sometimes included the PD’s voice asking questions, clapperboard and mic adjustments - anything that would help bring out the contestants personalities.

Judge VT’s.

The idea of the judge VT’s was to give a fun little insight into who they were and what made them a great judge. As many of them were professional singers I tried to include much of their own voices as a music bed for their VT, so it was a cross between a music video and traditional VT. With 100 judges we couldn’t shoot them all! So we chose to do 10 per series.
